Throwback: ToeJam & Earl

TJ&E

ToeJam & Earl was originally released on the Sega Genesis in 1991. It also happens to be one of the most mental games I have ever played!  I recently started replaying the game on the Virtual Console (which you can too download for 800 Wii points) and its still a blast. The point of this dungeon-crawling game is to find all the pieces of their spacecraft  that have been wrecked, so they can get back to their home planet: Funkotron.

You either choose to play as ToeJam (the orange alien that is hung like a moose), or Earl (the yellow fatboy with the stellar shades)–, or the more note worthy option, which is the two player co-op. The co-op works in that you can play together and share a screen or go venture off on your own through split screen– automatically turns on when you get to far away from each other. Each stage, though supposed to be based on Earth, will mostly just have you saying WTF (What the Funk?).  The dialogue and cutscenes are a riot, satirizing 90′s urban lingo and are jam packed with ghetto blasters and backwards caps. Power-ups in the game come contained in wrapped presents. The contents of a present are invisible to the player until it is opened. Afterwards, all presents of that appearance are visible. Certain screwball presents contain things like the loss of a life or a randomizer that makes all other visible presents invisible.

All in all it is a solid, funny game, with some good tunes. Play the game for more then 30 minutes and I promise you you’ll want to be doing complicated handshakes with the next dude you see.

The above video is a commercial for one of TJ&E’s sequels “ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron”. Also available for download on the Virtual Console.
