Impressions: Heavy Rain
February 27, 2010 in Impressions, Reviews by Art Webb

I’m going to keep this one short and sweet. So far this game has put me into a heavy sleep…
Now this is an impression, not a review, so I’ve only played the game for a little over an hour, but I’ve spent 95% of the time doing the following: catering to my kids, getting nagged at by my wife, wandering around and interacting with things that don’t matter. The graphics are incredible, not doubt, and the soundtrack is amazing. There are a couple moments of great suspense, but overall there has been NO ACTION.
Maybe this title wasn’t the best choice for me, as I normally have 30 minutes or less for my gaming time, but I do enjoy a good story line and from all the previews, it looked like this title would deliver on that point big time. All of the reviews I’ve seen have been great–gamerankings.com has it rated over 90%–and that definitely influenced my choice. I just hope I can make it far enough to find out if they’re right…

like, when the hell is something interesting going to happen?

The funny thing is that in the picture you posted there is a fight scene about five minutes from then(same scene) and after that the action tends to pick up a lot more(besides that one scene where you have to change a baby, feed it and put it to sleep….), either way If you go into looking for nonstop action and very little story(in other words, Halo) you will be very disappointed.
My thoughts on the game: It’s quite an experience as I really haven’t played a game quite like this before and I’ve played a hell of a lot games and to be honest, Heavy Rain is one of those games that you really only should play every once in a while, based purely on the fact that you can’t skip anything. I’ve finished it twice now(the day after release and yesterday – both with different endings) and I have to admit that it gets extremely boring based on the fact that everything is quite similar overall(in other words, as stated above don’t try and get every ending in a week, spread it over a few months). Either way, I found that at times the game can suffer from random bugs(I’ve only had the game completely freeze once so it’s nothing all that major),random frame rate issues(think of a game that was running at 30fps and then for no reason at all it it starts to run at 20fps – Doesn’t last all that long and it isn’t much of an issue but you can tell it’s happening) and massive plot holes.
I also hated some of the voice acting such as when ever a French voice actor says Origami they say it completely wrong and it just makes you cringe when you hear it. I also wasn’t very found of the voice actors for the kids as they sound they belong in special ed or something. I can’t be fucked to write anymore so I’ll just leave it at that(I also won’t bother to proof read so if something doesn’t make sense… screw you).

I had the game freeze on me a few times too. This is the only game my wife has actually wanted me to play. She just sits there and tells me what choices to make and I do the controls. It’s a good couples game. As gay as this sounds, I’m looking forward to going home and spending time playing this with my wife… She calls it a Lifetime movie video game. “Are you going to play that Lifetime movie game again? I can’t wait to see what happens.”
Did you make it to the chick’s shower scene Art? That dirty skank puts on old undies after she showers.
