Classic FPS Spectre 3D Arrives in App Store–FingerGaming

In my middle school’s computer lab, there were three games available to play: Math Blaster, The Oregon Trail, and the Battlezone-like first-person shooter Spectre VR. Few Macs had Spectre installed, so the opportunity to play it instead of the more educational offerings was rare. But getting to play an actual video game at school was sweet indeed.

Spectre 3D ($4.99) collects a number of single-player levels from the original 1991 Spectre and its 1994 sequel, Spectre VR. It also includes a selection of multiplayer maps playable across four modes — Arena, Capture the Flag, Flag Rally, and the all-new Base Raid challenge.

Spectre 3D’s multiplayer modes support up to 4 players over a Bluetooth connection, and up to 16 players over Wi-Fi or Internet. The game also includes optional 3D anaglyph stereographic support, though you’ll need to own a pair of 3D glasses to make the most of it.

Gameloft Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary By Giving Away Free iPhone Games–Finger Gaming

Mobile games publisher Gameloft, celebrating its tenth year of operation, announced that it will give away one of its App Store titles every weekday from May 10th through May 21st.

Each free game offer will be available for a limited time. After announcing the promoted title’s availability via the company’s Twitter feed, the selected game will be free to download for two hours only.

The first offer — a free copy of Gameloft’s 2009 racer Ferrari GT Evolution — has already expired, but the next free download will be available at an unannounced time tomorrow.

While Gameloft has not announced which titles will be released for free as part of the promotion, earlier releases in the company’s app catalog — including popular games like Hero of Sparta, Castle of Magic, and Let’s Golf! — are likely candidates.

You Can Now Catch Crabs From Your iPhone

If you’re one of the legion of viewers that tune into the Discovery Channel to watch men catch crabs, you’ll be pleased to know you can now catch crabs in the palm of your hand with Deadliest Catch for iPhone.

After a lackluster release on the Xbox 360 two years ago, it’s high time fans of Deadliest Catch got their hands on a worthwhile video game that depicts the danger and thrill of crabbing without the tedium and boredom of crabbing. Deadliest Catch for the iPhone sees players picking out a boat and venturing into the icy waters of the Bearing Sea, avoiding rough seas, dodging ice floes, and playing various mini-games, all in the name of making sure quality restaurants like Red Lobster have a special next week.

The game has a majority of favorable reviews so far, so it looks as if Hands-On Mobile might have done the brave men and other men of the Alaskan crabbing community proud.

I joke, but whenever I flip by this show on my cable box I have to stop and watch. I’d call it a guilty pleasure, but that just opens us up to more crab jokes.

Deadliest Catch is now available at the iPhone App Store for $3.99.

Monday Nitro Time!

Exclusive ‘Monster Trucks Nitro 2′ Hands-On–Touch Arcade

I really wanted to like the original Monster Trucks Nitro back when it was first released last year, but poor controls combined with a lackluster framerate and gameplay that didn’t make a whole lot of sense somehow managed to even make monster trucks not fun. Miniclip.com went back to the drawing board, and with the release of Monster Trucks Nitro 2, the game is much, much closer to what I wanted it to be the first time around.

Your truck is controlled by tilting the iPhone, with a slider along the bottom that controls your speed. The whole setup feels much more responsive compared to the first. Competing in a series of timed events, you’ll come across all kinds of crazy jumps and nitro tanks you can drive over for a temporary boost of speed. Hitting these tanks is vital, not only for good times, but also to get enough air to do flips which also rewards a small amount of boost. Read the rest of this entry →

Karate Champ Coming to iPhone in April–FingerGaming

After porting the classic laserdisc arcade game Cobra Command to the iPhone last year, publisher Revolutionary Concepts is bringing another ’80s-era Data East title — the one-on-one fighter Karate Champ — to the App Store in April.

Karate Champ was one of the earliest games in what is now a heavily populated genre, and predates Capcom’s Street Fighter franchise by several years. Over the course of a 12-stage single-player mode, players compete in a simulated karate tournament, with half or full points awarded for successful hits and knockdowns.

Revolutionary Concepts’ iPhone version is based on the upgraded Player vs. Player version of Karate Champ, and allows players to compete in one-on-one matches over a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection. The iPhone port of Karate Champ also retains the original arcade game’s unique dual-joystick control setup, and includes a “large mode” option that zooms the action to the width of the iPhone’s screen.

Revolutionary Concepts expects to release Karate Champ by the end of next month.

Puzzled They Didn’t Make The Whole Game Available At Launch

‘Puzzle Quest Chapter 3′ Finally Available as In-App Purchase–Touch Arcade

The long wait is now over; you can finally play through the whole Puzzle Quest story on your iPhone. Today, TransGaming’s Puzzle Quest was updated to version 1.5 enabling in-app purchases and a few other graphic, sound, and bug fixes.

If you already have Chapters 1 & 2, all you have to do is update your game and visit the in-game store to buy Chapter 3 for only $1.99. If you not sure about buying one of the best RPG puzzlers, download the free version, then purchase chapters 1, 2 and 3 for only $4.99.

TransGaming says that the trilogy includes content from the Revenge of the Plague Lord expansion pack and the original game. Making this a great deal for $4.99 or $6.98 depending on what route you take.

Discussion in our forums has been positive and so far no issues have been reported about the update.
